Artist Talk: Kayla Bauer

I think Kayla Bauer's art is a vivid representation of her passions.  Her affinity for the color pink and her fascination with East Asian culture, particularly Japanese influences, are not just artistic choices but reflections of her personal interests.   These elements are deeply intertwined in her work, offering a glimpse into who she is as an artist and an individual.

Her artwork and website are pink, and she wore a pink bag when she came for the artist talk. The color pink, for Kayla, is more than a favorite hue. It represents a personal signature, a way of seeing the world. In her art, pink is not just visually striking, but it also conveys emotions and ideas. As Kayla mentioned, pink brings a sense of, warmth, cute, and lovely things. Her installation, STAY WITH ME, includes lots of objects in pink, and as she introduced, she loves these pink objects, and wants them to look cute.

And her exploration of Japanese culture is not just an interest; it's a journey of discovery that continually evolves and influences her art. This influence extends beyond mere aesthetic elements, encompassing the rich history, traditions, and contemporary aspects of Japanese society. Her work often reflects a blend of Eastern and Western styles, creating a unique visual language that speaks to a global audience. In her installation, I LEFT MY HEART…, she has many photos she took in Chinatown in San Francisco, and she thinks about " how this place was a literal entry point to the States for these commodities." And I think her Installation is not only a visual art project, but also has interesting research behind it.
